As I write this, the new year 7 pupils are boarding coaches off to Glan Llyn for the week of bonding over various activities. Your child, in the safe hands of experienced staff, will have experiences they can't get in the classroom. Instead of coming home today and telling you they were lost in school, they'll be with new friends, recounting exciting adventures of the day. You'll miss them terribly - until they come home with the bag full of dirty, wet clothing, missing socks and someone else's t-shirt. On the day they return, whilst you are waiting for the coaches, come and join us, Cyfeillion Gwynllyw, for a free coffee in the school. We have been there, fretting over late coaches (though they're usually good for timing) and thought it would be a good opportunity for you to get to know some of the other parents. We'll be in the school hall from around 6.30pm on Friday, as the coach is expected around 7.30pm. Why not join us, get a free coffee while you wait and perhaps buy a cake from us to kick off this year's fundraising?

The Facebook page is a "Fan Page" - I post stuff, you "follow it" (If you want to) - We don't chat, it's not fun, it's not private - it's intended as an advertisement. Anyone who sees it, sees everything on it. That's why it contains a warning in the description for people - Don't post personal information on it - it's a "billboard" for all to see. If you do this and an admin spots it, we'll take it down - for safety's sake. The group, however, is a different beast. Join, chat, post, all private/secret. Just for Gwynllyw parents/guardians. Anything you post there can only be seen by the members in the group. Until you join, you can't see what's going on in the group. It is with great sadness that we have had to cancel our plans for the Summer "It's a knockout" event.
Some concerns were raised by the education department and in light of the recent tragic event at Drayton Manor theme park, the school was unable to fully support to the event at this time. The only viable option was to cancel and Cyfeillion Gwynllyw may have to forfeit the deposit paid if the company cannot re-sell the event at such short notice. We can assure you this has been discussed at length and every effort has been made to resolve this matter. Hopefully, with more time to prepare, we will be able to schedule something for next summer, as long as all health and safety concerns can be addressed and we are fully supported, both by the school and the parents - we can't arrange events on this scale without your support. We realise this will be disappointing news for some and can only apologise but in the circumstances it is beyond our control. Thank you for your continued support. Earlier in March, during a "Communities Together" session at Bron Afon Community Housing, the Environmental Teamleader, Steve Caddy, offered to support the upcoming activities afternoon by providing a "Grow Wild" wildflower planting kit to the PTA, which comprised plant labels, seeds and a guide to planting. Hopefully, over the coming weeks, you'll be able to see some of the wildflowers pictured below flourishing in the school grounds.
Pupils engaged in various activities on 7th April, including planting some free "Seeds for Bees" obtained for the PTA from 38 Degrees, who actively campaign about almost everything, including promotion of wildlife.
Just Bee Drinks - the company that recently featured on Dragons Den allowed me to purchase a box of 50 packets of seeds at a very generous discount. I donated these to the school for planting on the activities afternoon. In addition to the wildflowers, the PTA recently received 960 sunflower seeds (one for every child in the school) from The-big-sunflower-project, which is an initiative using sunflowers to raise awareness of a rare neuromuscular condition.
Could you be the next eddie butler, jonathan davies, Sara elgan or Catrin Heledd?A recent survey by PTA UK, the national charity which supports parent associations in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and of which Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw's PTA "Cyfeillion Gwynllyw" is a member, found that their members as a whole spend three million hours a year volunteering their time in schools nationwide. Based on the minimum wage, this is the equivalent of £20 million a year in time being donated to schools.
The research carried out in October 2016 also showed that as a group, PTA UK members raised over £99 million through fundraising initiatives which goes directly back into schools. Parents at Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw have volunteered their time on the school parent and teacher association (PTA) by being actively involved in building the school community, supporting teaching, and holding events that raise money to pay for school improvements and new equipment for local children.
